Flora Wong (黃芷蕾) is a musician, creative producer, educator and researcher with a passion for storytelling through music and the exploration of culture and identity through the arts. Born in Hong Kong, she has lived and worked in Meanjin/Brisbane for most of her life, but her work has taken her all over Australia and the world. She is a member of Meanjin/Brisbane-based ensembles Nonsemble, Voltfruit, Tango Enigmático and Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra, and Co-Director of Dots+Loops.
As a violinist, she is equally at home improvising with the sounds of her surroundings in open-air settings, producing music for violin and electronics, performing contemporary compositions, and collaborating with artists of all disciplines, styles and backgrounds. She has performed with artists including Tenzin Choegyal, Jaguar Jonze, Sachém, and Boy & Bear, recorded with artists such as The Kite String Tangle, Sophie Min, Luke Cuerel, and Ed Kuepper, and given the Australian premiere performance of works by Kate Moore, Missy Mazzoli and Pamela Z. Her debut EP Geburtstag was released through Corella Recordings in 2022 and features works that she commissioned by Connor D’Netto, MJ O’Neill, Chris Perren and Kezia Yap. Her recording of Chris Perren’s Escapement with Jodie Rottle was featured in Limelight’s Australian Art Music Playlist, Viking’s Choice with NPR’s Lars Gotrich, and The Strad. |
As an educator, she is an Adjunct Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland School of Music, and the lead mentor of Dots+Loops’ Performance Fellowship program. She has experience as an instrumental music teacher in primary and secondary schools, a lecturer in contemporary violin at JMC Academy, and as a workshop presenter for Musica Viva Australia and the Queensland Academies Creative Industries (QACI).
Flora is a Creative Consultant for Musica Viva Australia, and has previously worked for the organisation as a State Coordinator and Producer. She has been a Lead Producer and Lead Artist of Brisbane City Council’s BrisAsia Festival, and serves on the board of Digi Youth Arts as the Secretary.
She is currently a PhD candidate at Griffith University’s Creative Arts Research Institute as part of the Creative Change Project, which examines the role of community music in addressing social inequities in Australia. Her research partners with QMF and their Queensland Music Trails initiative to investigate the role of community music in fostering social equity in the South West Queensland towns of Charleville and Cunnamulla.
In addition to her debut EP, her recent releases included the track 洗米 (Washing Rice) as part of Age of Leisure's compilation Textures, a remix for Mindy Meng Wang and Tim Shiel, Tango Enigmatico’s debut EP Nuevo y Vivo, and Nonsemble's third album Archaeopteryx.
