Flora Wong (黃芷蕾) is a musician, educator, producer and researcher who is drawn to contemporary, exploratory, cross-disciplinary and community arts. She is a member of Meanjin/Brisbane-based ensembles Nonsemble, Voltfruit, Helge Quartet, Tango Enigmático and Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra, Associate Director of Dots+Loops and a Lead Producer of BrisAsia Festival for Brisbane City Council.
As a violinist, she is equally at home performing contemporary classical repertoire, producing ambient music for violin and electronics, and tracking strings for pop, jazz, folk and electronic artists in the studio. She is a founding member of Nonsemble, a group whose releases have been described variously as “music that tempers its intellectual conceits with dramatic musical flourishes and bombast” (4ZZZ) and “transcend[ing] the labels of chamber orchestra and indie-rock altogether” (Independent Clauses). She has commissioned and premiered works by Connor D’Netto, MJ O’Neill, Chris Perren and Kezia Yap, and given the Australian premieres of works by Kate Moore, Missy Mazzoli and Pamela Z. Her interest in diverse styles of music has led her to perform with a wide range of artists including Tenzin Choegyal, Timothy Munro, Louise Denson, and Boy & Bear. She has extensive recording studio experience across many genres, with artists including Jaguar Jonze, The Kite String Tangle, Sophie Min, the Luke Cuerel Orchestra and Ed Kuepper. |
As an educator, she is Adjunct Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland School of Music, and has worked as the QLD State Coordinator and Producer for Musica Viva Australia and casual lecturer in contemporary violin at JMC Academy. She is the coordinator and lead mentor of Dots+Loops’ Performance Fellowship program, and delivers workshops and guest lectures for QACI and the UQ School of Music. She is currently a PhD candidate at Griffith University’s Creative Arts Research Institute as part of the Creative Change project, which examines the role of community music in addressing social inequalities in so-called Australia.
Her 2022 releases have included her debut solo track as part of Age of Leisure's compilation 'Textures', as well as Tango Enigmatico’s debut EP 'Nuevo y Vivo'. Her debut EP of works commissioned through the Geburtstag project will be released in June.
