I'm delighted to share that violist Phoebe Green will be performing my solo violin/viola work "Listening by the Warrego" as part of Kammerklang's 2025 concert series. Out of the Shadows is an hour-long program that Phoebe has curated of Australian works for solo viola. It invites audiences in for deep listening and contemplation of the unknown, unseen, and unheard. Listening by the Warrego This work is an invitation to listen deeply to Country. In 2023, I spent some time as a musician-in-residence in two remote towns in South-West Queensland: Cunnamulla (Kunja Country) and Charleville (Bidjara Country). Both towns are located along the Warrego River, and I spent many a morning or evening walking along the river, listening to the sounds of birds, insects, people - the sounds of life sustained by the river. When I found myself back in Magandjin/Brisbane, I missed the way that my mind had felt slower and my ears more attentive when I'd been out west. Returning to some of the field recordings I'd made by the river for inspiration, I began to improvise, listening and responding to familiar sounds. The improvisations soon shaped themselves into a piece that I would play whenever I needed a reminder of how to breathe and listen deeply. It fills me with joy that Phoebe will be sharing this work with audiences in Melbourne and Sydney, and that miles away from the Warrego, rooms of people will slow down and listen together. Phoebe Green performs Out of the Shadows at the Motley Bauhaus in Melbourne on May 17 and Church Street Studios in Sydney on June 14, featuring music by Pedro Alvarez, Aditya Ryan Bhat, Christine Pan, Dominik Karski, Emily Sheppard, Flora Wong and a world premiere commission for Phoebe by Kammerklang’s artistic director, Cameron Lam.
